Helping Our Neighbors Who Struggle With Housing Stability

Accepting and helping our neighbors regardless of housing instability or experiencing homelessness is a critical component to preventing and ending homelessness. Miscommunication, bias, and judgement only fuel hostility and harm our communities. In most instances, we cannot choose our neighbors when persons buy the house next door to us or when new tenants rent the apartment near us. Of course, in many communities and neighborhoods, there is a percentage of the population who have malignant intent and selfish motives. However, this population will exist in our communities regardless of housing status. In fact, many persons with criminal intent and backgrounds have access to stable housing and a support system.

To end homelessness, a community-wide coordinated approach to delivering services, housing, and programs is needed. To address homelessness, communities should take a coordinated approach, moving from a collection of individual programs to a community-wide response that is strategic and data driven. Communities that have adopted this approach use data about the needs of those experiencing homelessness to inform how they allocate resources, services, and programs. -USICH
